The Wisdom Stories Series from the Teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda They enter into our consciousness, captivating our imagination with interesting characters and fantastic storylines. Beneath the surface, they recount the age-old human drama with circumstances and plots not so very different from our own. Certainly parallels, and more importantly lessons, can be drawn that continue to instruct, and to change the way we live and relate to one another. This second volume in the WISDOM STORIES SERIES picks up where volume one left off, with stories shared by the great yoga master Paramhansa Yogananda (author of the best-selling spiritual classic title Autobiography of a Yogi) and his close, direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda. These stories have been told for generations, imparting universal values of compassion and understanding, virtue, dharma (right action), and the ability to relate to another’s reality. About The Wisdom Stories Series Each story is followed by a “wisdom gem,” shedding light on such spiritually central topics as courage, unconditional love, faith, and wisdom. Whether you are a teacher, parent, student, or devotee, these stories are an excellent resource to turn to again and again for inspiration, sharing, and personal study.Excerpt from...Stories from India, Volume Two by Paramhansa Yogananda Introduction The research for Stories from India by Paramhansa Yogananda unearthed many wonderful tales that continue to inspire, offer deep insights, and overall, entertain our hearts and lives. It is our joy to offer to you this second volume. Stories are a powerful teacher. They enter into our consciousness, captivating our imagination with characters and fantastic story lines. Beneath the surface, they reveal the age-old drama of humankind with circumstances and plots not so very different from the times we live in today. Certainly parallels, and more importantly lessons, can be drawn that continue to teach and change the way we live, the way we relate to one another. I have met many people from around the world, reared on traditional stories unique to their culture. These stories have imparted lifelong traits of compassion and understanding, virtue, dharma (right action), the ability to relate to another’s reality. As a universal medium they reach into the hearts of all God’s children — young and old — delivering timeless truths in ways easy to digest and assimilate. Perhaps, more than anything, this is why Paramhansa Yogananda enjoyed sharing stories and why his direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda, did the same through his lectures, satsangs and many books. Such stories allowed people to relax, be fully present and receptive, and understand truths and subtleties they might otherwise have missed. Certainly these stories opened doors of understanding and continue to do so. For your pleasure and reference, we have cataloged these stories according to their predominant spiritual quality in addition to the typical Table of Contents by title. It is our hope that you enjoy these stories, take the time to be with them, and share them with your friends in the company of the master storyteller himself, Paramhansa Yogananda, in your own heart. Boundless Blessings,Nayaswami Maria Humility The Most Humble God Ages ago, Saint Bhrigu of India had a desire to find the most humble form God had ever taken. He wandered all over the Himalayan Mountains and the holy places in search of some incarnation of God he could accept as a guru. But, since he wished an example of humility to follow, he determined that the God must have this attribute. He met many Saints, whom he questioned as to where he could find such a god-guru. After a strenuous search, he found that all the Saints that he met gave him the names of the same three forms of God, Brahma, Shiva, and Vishnu, who was then incarnated as Krishna — and assured him that one of them was sure to be the right one. Saint Bhrigu heard that Brahma could create anything, Shiva could destroy anything, and Krishna (Vishnu) could preserve anything from annihilation, for they represented the creative, destructive, and preservative principles active in all Creation. Bewildered as to who was the humblest and greatest of the three, he conceived a queer plan to test them. His great powers, gained through meditation, enabled him to leave his body and find God, in the form of Brahma, on the astral plane. Without much ceremony of introduction, in a very disrespectful manner he began to criticize him. “Hey, Brahma, what is the matter with you? Why don’t you stand up and greet me when I come?” Brahma inwardly was astonished at the audacity of this mortal man and retorted: “Do you know to whom you are talking?” “Yes sir,” said Bhrigu, “of course, I know that I am talking to that despicable God who is the creator of vermin, plagues, mosquitoes, diseases, criminals, and all ugly things in Creation. Why don’t you reform yourself and create only good things?” Brahma was beside himself with wrath and threateningly replied: “Get back to earth before I convert you into a stone by the gorgon gaze of my will.” Saint Bhrigu laughed at him and left, saying: “O no, you cannot hate me or make me into a stone, for God and I are One.” Brahma suddenly awoke from his error and apologized. Then Bhrigu said: “I forgive you Brahma, but I am disappointed not to have found in you what I wanted to see.” Then Bhrigu repaired to Shiva, who was seen getting ready to meditate on all the things beyond their prime that must be brought to an end. As soon as Shiva’s form met the gaze of Bhrigu, the Saint shouted savagely: “Hey, Shiva, you Grand Cosmic Killer, why don’t you stop shattering worlds, murdering innocent babies, and inventing ingenious death-dealing devices? Why don’t you cease destroying the beautiful and useful things and beings of the earth and get busy annihilating the wicked things?” Shiva could not believe his ears, that a mortal man like Saint Bhrigu could be so audacious and free with his speech. He shouted: “Shut up, or I will reduce you to ashes with the burning magnetism of my Spiritual Eye.” Saint Bhrigu derisively retorted: “Fine use you will make of your Spiritual Eye. Go ahead, I dare you to burn up the God in me, you Grand Killer!” Shiva remained paralyzed with anger and speechless at the awakening words of Saint Bhrigu, who soon melted away from his sight, saying: “Oh, what a disappointment you are.” At last, almost despairing because he could not find the world’s most humble God, he skeptically resorted to the third God — Vishnu, who controlled the preserving principle of the Cosmos. But this time he stayed on earth and sought out the prophet Krishna — in whom these great powers were manifesting. Saint Bhrigu found Prophet Krishna sound asleep on a sofa in his palace. He stood there watching the halo of peace radiating from the prophetic face of Krishna. Then, unable to think of any way to test him, in a fit of emotion Saint Bhrigu kicked Krishna on the chest, shouting: “You sleeping fool, wake up, see who is here.” Krishna awakened with the sweetest, most undismayed, loving smile, and quickly picked up the kicking foot of Saint Bhrigu, and while massaging it, he said gently: “Ah, my Lord Bhrigu, is your foot hurt?” Saint Bhrigu, beside himself with simultaneous visitations of remorse and joy, cried out: “I have found him. I have found him. O, Prophet Krishna, Thou art the world’s most humble Being, even as God is. Thou art, O Krishna, the greatest, the most humble form of God. You can teach me. I accept you as my Guru. Will you accept me?” And Krishna accepted Bhrigu as his disciple. Wisdom Gem Now, dear friends, you realize that if you want to know the greatest of all Beings, the wisest in the Cosmos, our God, you must be humble, for the humble man makes a charming altar for God in himself, and establishes his altar of humility in every heart that he meets. — by Paramhansa YoganandaContents Introduction  xi Humility The Most Humble God  The Three Gods and the Lord of Gods 10Sustainer of the Universe 16 Faith The Fisherman and the Hindu Priest 21God Alone 25 Right Action (Dharma) The Reward of Virtue 31The Story of a Man Who Was Healed by Suggestion 38 Self-Control Sadashiva Takes a Vow of Silence 43The Saint Who Ate Fire 45Spiritual HappinessThe Himalayan Musk Deer 53The Philosopher’s Stone 55 Non-Attachment A Fearful Disease 65The Man Who Wouldn’t Be King 67The Wishing Tree 73The Woman Who Loved God as Her Son 77The Power of Delusion 82The Man, the Donkey, and the Boy 85The Farmer Who Dreamed His Sons Were Killed by a Cobra 88 Truthfulness Guru (Preceptor) Nanaka 93The Saint Who Went to Hades Speaking Truth 97 Devotion The Story of Sri Chaitanya 109Radha, the Greatest of the Gopis 113 Willpower  The Holy Squirrel 119The Bandit and the Bull 124 Wisdom Getting Out of Delusion 133Six Blind Men and the Elephant 135That Moral Backbone 140 Indices Index: Stories Listed by Their Spiritual Qualities 145Index: Spiritual Qualities Listed by Their Stories 152 Bibliography 158 About the Storyteller — Author Paramhansa Yogananda 160 Further Explorations 163

Scientific Healing Affirmations is a beloved classic book of the great yoga master, Paramhansa Yogananda (1893-1952), author of Autobiography of a Yogi. This is a reprint of the original 1924 classic by Yogananda: a pioneering work in the field of self-healing and self-transformation. Yogananda explains that words are crystallized thoughts, and have life-changing power when spoken with conviction, concentration, willpower, and feeling. This book offers far more than mere suggestions for achieving positive attitudes. Yogananda explains in simple language how affirmations can recreate us—physically, mentally, and spiritually. He offers us more than mere suggestions for a positive attitude, showing us how to impregnate our words with spiritual force. This little book will be a treasured companion on the road to realizing your highest, divine potential. Added to this text are over fifty of Yogananda’s well-loved “Short Affirmations,” taken from issues of East-West and Inner Culture magazines from 1932 to 1942. This little book will be a treasured companion on the road to realizing your highest, divine potential. Man's word is Spirit in man. Words are sounds occasioned by the vibrations of thoughts. Thoughts are vibrations sent forth by the ego or soul. Every word that leaves your mouth ought to be potent with genuine soul vibration. The words of most people are lifeless because they are spoken automatically, without being impregnated with soul force. Too much talking, exaggeration, or falsehood is like shooting bullets out of a toy gun, without the gunpowder. That is why the prayers or words of such people do not produce any desired changes. Every word you utter must represent not only Truth, but also some of your own realized soul force. Words without soul force are like husks without the corn. Words that are saturated with sincerity, conviction, faith, and intuition are like vibration bombs, which can explode the rocks of difficulties and create the change desired. Avoid speaking unpleasant words, even if they are true. Sincere words or affirmations repeated understandingly, feelingly, and willingly are sure to move the omnipresent Cosmic Vibratory Force to render aid in your difficulty. Appeal to that Force with infinite confidence, casting out all doubt. If your affirmations are spoken with disbelief, or while looking for the desired result, your attention is deflected from its mark. You should not sow the vibratory prayer seed in the soil of Cosmic Consciousness and then continually pick it out to see if it has germinated into the desired result. —Paramhansa Yogananda, excerpt from Scientific Healing Affirmations, Crystal Clarity PublishersContents 3 Spiritual Power of Man’s Word 5 The God-Given Power of Man 8 Mental Responsibility for Chronic Diseases 11 What Cures? 12 Cure According to Temperament 16 Two Factors in Healing 17 Faith More Important Than Time 19 Classification of Healing 21 To Prevent Physical Disease24 To Prevent Mental Disease 25 To Prevent Spiritual Disease 27 Evaluation of Curative Methods 31 Consciousness and Vibration 33 Difference Between Matter and Spirit 36 Body and Consciousness Created by Man in the Dream State 37 World Illusion 39 Underlying Unity of Medical and Mental Cures 41 Danger of Blind Denial of Matter 43 The Body as Materialized Vibration PRACTICING AFFIRMATIONS 47 The Different States of Chanting 49 Superconsciousness—Not Unconsciousness 50 Physiological Centers 52 Value of Different Methods of Cure 54 Individual and Group Directions 58 Preliminary Rules to Be Observed Before Affirmations 60 General Healing Affirmation 66 Short Affirmations 69 Thought Affirmation 70 Will Affirmation 71 For the Development and Right Guidance of Reason and Cure of Dull Intelligence 73 Reason Affirmation 74 Short Affirmations 76 Wisdom Affirmation 79 Short Affirmations 82 Success Affirmations (for Healing of Unsuccess Consciousness) 84 Material Success Affirmation 86 Short Affirmations 88 Spiritual Success 89 Spiritual Success Affirmation (for Healing the Soul’s Ignorance) 90 Short Affirmations 92 Healing Others 93 Psychological Success Affirmation 95 Affirmation for the Eyes 98 Physical Exercise for the Stomach 99 Exercise for the Teeth 100 For Regulating Sex Force 103 For Curing Bad Habits 105 Freedom Affirmation 106 Short Affirmations

Conversations with Yogananda This is an unparalleled firsthand account of Paramhansa Yogananda and his teachings, written by one of his closest students. Yogananda is one of the world's most widely known and universally respected spiritual masters. His Autobiography of a Yogi has helped stimulate a spiritual awakening in the West and a spiritual renaissance in his native land of India. More than half a century ago, in a hilltop ashram in Los Angeles, California, an American disciple sat at the feet of his Master, faithfully recording his words, as his teacher had asked him to do. Paramhansa Yogananda knew this disciple would carry his message to people everywhere. Kriyananda was often present when Yogananda spoke privately with other close disciples; when he received visitors and answered their questions; when he was dictating and discussing his important writings. Yogananda put Kriyananda in charge of the other monks, and gave him advice for their spiritual development. In all these situations, Kriyananda recorded the words and guidance of Yogananda, preserving for the ages wisdom that would otherwise have been lost, and giving us an intimate glimpse of life with Yogananda never before shared by any other student. These Conversations include not only Yogananda's words as he first spoke them, but also the added insight of an intimate disciple who has spent more than 50 years reflecting on and practicing the teachings of Yogananda. Through these conversations, Yogananda comes alive. Time and space dissolve. We sit at the feet of the Master, listen to his words, receive his wisdom, delight in his humor, and are transformed by his love.

The Moments of Truth series Little Books, Big Wisdom Condensations of some of the greatest scriptures of our time, the Moments of Truth series takes spiritual truths and makes them easily accessible. Small, pocket-sized editions will allow you to bring these nuggets of wisdom with you on your travels — whether on pilgrimage or to the workplace. Start and end your day with a gem of inspiration with these carefully chosen excerpts from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Explained, Autobiography of a Yogi, TheEssence of the Bhagavad Gita, and more! One day, as I was deeply concentrated on the pages of Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat, I suddenly beheld the walls of its outer meanings crumble away. Lo! vast inner meanings opened like a golden treasure house before my gaze. — Paramhansa Yogananda Moments of Truth, Volume One: Excerpts from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Explained is the first in a series of small books of excerpts from the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda, as set forth in his own books and in those of his close disciple, Swami Kriyananda. The gems of wisdom in this little volume are taken fromYogananda’s commentaries on The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, considered by Westerners a celebration of earthly pleasures, but widely recognized in the East as a work of profound spirituality. Yogananda’s commentaries are a true scripture in their own right. These selections have scripture’s power to change your consciousness, and your life. From the book: “Behold this one flaming truth: All life is fleeting. Cling to that understanding, and seek, then, within yourself that which alone endures.”Moments of Truth, Volume One Excerpts from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Explained By Paramhansa Yogananda Edited by Swami Kriyananda ( J. Donald Walters) Introduction This book contains nuggets of wisdom excerpted from one of the great works of modern times: The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Explained, by Paramhansa Yogananda. The excerpts here contained are not from the poem itself, but from the commentary. They are words to live by: wise insights by one of the great spiritual figures of our times that have the power profoundly to change people’s lives. As Yogananda explains in The Rubaiyat . . . Explained, Omar Khayyam’s work is deeply spiritual; it is not, as most Westerners believe, a poem in praise of earthly pleasures. Taking the inner meaning of this work to ever greater depths, Paramhansa Yogananda produced one of his own deepest and most profoundly moving spiritual works. — Swami Kriyananda The Excerpts Stanza 6—God is Eternal Silence. To those who love Him purely He speaks through the voice of silent intuition. Stanza 7—Waste not these few, precious earth years. The bird of life has but a short arc of time to fly. Soon — ah, how sadly soon! — it will slip its earthly form and vanish into the Infinite. Stanza 9—Odiscerning one! rise above life’s dualities, above the endless gradations of relativity. Lo! every plan for success, so wantonly embraced; every looming disaster, so fearfully denied — all have as their sum total: zero! What are they but fictions — fleeting mind-children in life’s constantly changing dream. Ignore them!

Hope for a Better World! In these turbulent times when wars, religious strife, stifling bureaucracy, and urban decay threaten our very humanity, reducing us to social statistics, a fresh approach to the creation of a truly viable society is desperately needed. In this intellectual tour de force J. Donald Walters analyzes with deep insight the views expressed by many of the great thinkers in the West, including Plato, Copernicus, Machiavelli, Malthus, Adam Smith, Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud. He studies their conceptions and misconceptions about the individual’s relation to himself and to society. He shows where their influence has proved adverse, then offers deeply considered, fresh alternatives. Walters urges the reader to resist the hypnosis of “intellectual authority.” Seek the key to a happy and fulfilled life, he says, in personal integrity. In his last chapter he draws on his own experience in developing cooperative communities. He describes how they can encourage a commonsense way of life, deepen human relationships, and inspire people to fulfill their own higher potentials. Hope for a Better World! offers compelling solutions to many of the challenges that face humanity today. Indeed, it succeeds—originally and excitingly—in offering real hope for a better world.Contents Preface 1. The Utopian Dream 2. Copernicus: Center, Anyone? 3. Machiavelli and Social Governance 4. Paramhansa Yogananda came with a world-redeeming message and brought great souls to help him make it known. One of those great souls was Swami Kriyananda. Many times, Yogananda told Kriyananda, “You have a great work to do.” After his death, Yogananda’s chief disciple, Rajarshi Janakananda, repeated the commission: “You have a great work to do, and Master will give you the strength to do it.” What was it like to work with a soul whose entire energy and consciousness were dedicated to the service of his guru? Nayaswami Padma writes: “My time with Swami was precious beyond the ability of words to express…. Every moment in his presence was a moment when I felt closer to God.” With this book, Nayaswami Padma shares the priceless blessings of her many interactions with a great direct disciple of an avatar, a world teacher who was one with God. Material Success Through Yoga Principles Are you satisfied with your life as it is? Do you want to keep pushing forward, armed only with grit and determination? Or would you like to learn how to align your will with the power of the universe? This book can transform your life at its core. This is the opportunity that stands before you now. Material Success through Yoga Principles is in a sense, an autobiography of perseverance and loyalty to principle until success is achieved. Swami Kriyananda’s own life is proof that these principles work. And the successful lives of thousands he has influenced show that these principles can be of benefit to anyone who learns and uses them. Many people, Paramhansa Yogananda said, fail to succeed in life for lack of what he called “spiritual adventurousness.” Successful people are those who have the imagination, and the courage, to embrace new ways of doing things, even if others scoff, or turn away.Contents Introduction Lessons: 1. SONGS OF THE SOUL Original Writings of Paramhansa Yogananda Paramhansa Yogananda is best known for his Autobiography of a Yogi, a book that he said the Lord Himself commissioned him to write, in response to a silent call among many souls for a “practical religion” that would enable them to know the Divinity that dwells in their own hearts and souls. Those who met Yogananda were overwhelmed by the magnetic power of his love. Saints and sages recognized him as one of their own. Sri Ananda Moyi Ma, Ramana Maharshi, Sri Rama Yogi, and Mahatma Gandhi—these and many other great souls perceived in him an avatar, God incarnated with the power to redeem not only a few close disciples but a vast flock who would be transformed by his divine ray. “As a bright light shining in the midst of darkness, so was Yogananda’s presence in this world. Such a great soul comes on earth only rarely, when there is a real need among men.” – The Shankaracharya of Kanchipuram, spiritual leader of millions of Hindus. Though divinely tasked with bringing a practical teaching, Yogananda preferred to express his wisdom not in dry intellectual terms but as pure, expansive feeling. To drink his poetry is to be drawn into the web of his boundless, childlike love. Nor was his vision limited to this earthly plane – in one moment his Songs of the Soul invite us to join him as he plays among the stars with his Cosmic Beloved. Then they call us to discover that portion of our own hearts that is eternally one with the Nearest and Dearest. Like his famous Whispers From Eternity, this volume is a bubbling, singing wellspring of spiritual healing that we can bring with us everywhere. The Pursuit of Happiness Is Through Wisdom Swami Sri Yukteswar, the great yoga master and guru of Paramhansa Yogananda, lived in India from 1855 until 1936. In his book The Holy Science, he speaks about the natural love of the heart and how it can be awakened. This process involves the removal of eight particular inner tensions, which he calls “the meannesses of the heart”: hatred, shame, fear, grief, condemnation, race prejudice, pride of pedigree, and a narrow sense of respectability. With engaging candor, the author reveals the joy that blossoms as these “mean” traits in the heart are detected—and overcome. Whatever position you hold in society, wherever you are in your own soul search, these true-to-life stories and principles of spiritual psychology will help change your consciousness. Following the clues, you can rise above depression, conquer oppressive tendencies, and reclaim the bliss of your own higher Self.Contents Acknowledgements vii Preface ix Introduction: Why This Book? xi Part One chapter 1 A Sage for a Friend? 3 chapter 2 His Own Scripture 7 chapter 3 Introspection, a Key to Wisdom 11 chapter 4 Removing the Log 14 Part Two—Removing the Eight Bondages chapter 5 Hatred 19 chapter 6 Shame 26 chapter 7 Fear 32 chapter 8 Grief 39 chapter 9 Condemnation 40 chapter 10 Racial Prejudice 47 chapter 11Pride of Pedigree 53 chapter 12Smugness 60 Part Three—The Stages of the Heart chapter 13Introduction to the Stages of the Heart 77 chapter 14The Dark Heart 81 chapter 15The Propelled Heart 86 chapter 16The Steady Heart 91 chapter 17The Devoted Heart 98 Part Four—Three Helpful Practices chapter 18Introduction to Three Helpful Practices 115 chapter 19Patience, to Transcend Time 118 chapter 20Swadhiyaya — Deep Study 123 chapter 21Listening 130 Conclusion 133 Further Explorations 140

Yet how often, when confronted with life’s endless dilemmas, have you actually asked the golden question: What is wise in this situation? Surely, when you do, you develop some practical wisdom, especially if you not only ask the question but also train yourself to listen for the answer. You may then become very successful, for wisdom breeds success on all the levels. But true wisdom can only come if we ask an even more pertinent question underlying all our human striving: what is life all about?

How to Be Happy...All the TimeParamhansa YoganandaThe human drive for happiness is one of our most far-reaching and fundamental needs. Yet, despite our desperate search for happiness, according to a recent Gallup Poll, only a minority of North Americans describe themselves as “very happy.” It seems that very few of us have truly unlocked the secrets of lasting joy and inner peace. Now, in this volume of all-new, never-before-released material, Paramhansa Yogananda—who has hundreds of thousands of followers and admirers in North America—playfully and powerfully explains virtually everything needed to lead a happier, more fulfilling life. Topics covered include: looking for happiness in the right places; choosing to be happy; tools and techniques for achieving happiness; sharing happiness with others; balancing success and happiness, and many more. How to Be Happy All the TimeExcerpt from Chapter OneTo seek happiness outside ourselves is like trying to lasso a cloud. Happiness is not a thing: It is a state of mind. It must be lived. Neither worldly power nor moneymaking schemes can ever capture happiness. Mental restlessness results from an outward focus of awareness. Restlessness itself guarantees that happiness will remain elusive. Temporal power and money are not states of mind. Once obtained, they only dilute a person’s happiness. Certainly they cannot enhance it. The more widely we scatter our energies, the less power we have left to direct toward any specific undertaking. Octopus habits of worry and nervousness rise from ocean depths in the subconscious, fling tentacles around our minds, and crush to death all that we once knew of inner peace. True happiness is never to be found outside the Self. Those who seek it there are as if chasing rainbows among the clouds!Like the short-lived roses, countless human beings appear daily in earth’s garden. In their youth, they open fresh, hopeful buds, welcoming life’s promises and nodding with eager expectancy to every breeze of sense-enjoyment. And then—the petals begin to fade; expectancy turns to disappointment. In the twilight of old age they droop, gray in disillusionment. Mark the rose’s example: Such is the destiny of human beings who live centered in the senses. Analyze, with understanding born of introspection, the true nature of sense-pleasures. For even as you delight in them, don’t you sense in your heart a chilling breath of doubt and uncertainty? You cling to them, yet know in your heart that someday they cannot but betray you. Closer scrutiny reveals that sense-indulgence actually mocks its votaries. What it offers is not freedom, but soul-bondage. The way of escape lies not, as most people imagine, down moss-soft lanes of further indulgence, but up hard, rocky paths of self-control.People forget that the price of luxury is an ever-increasing expenditure of nerve and brain energy, and the consequent shortening of their natural life span. Materialists become so engrossed in the task of making money that they can’t relax enough to enjoy their comforts even after they’ve acquired them. ...ContentsLooking for Happiness in the Wrong PlaceHappiness Is a ChoiceAvoiding the Happiness ThievesLearn to BehaveSimplicity Is the KeySharing Your Happiness with OthersTrue Success and ProsperityInner Freedom and JoyFinding God Is the Greatest Happiness

Once and Future Christ: When East Meets WestThere is a great need in these times for a deeper and more universal understanding of the teachings of Jesus Christ. No mere intellectual analysis possesses the spiritual power and grace to transform the divisive dogma that separates sincere Christians from other faiths. The yogis of India, both ancient and modern, have gifted to the world a revelation of universality for the healing of the nations.Paramhansa Yogananda came to America in 1920 to focus the light of India’s timeless and timely wisdom upon the teachings of Jesus Christ. In Once and Future Christ, Nayaswami Hriman McGilloway expands upon that message with the inclusion of modern scientific discoveries and an exploration of the similarities and relationships between Christianity and Yoga. This book describes the inevitable evolution of Christian dogma towards greater inclusivity. The pathway of this future evolution leads to an understanding that the individual soul’s relationship to God is the goal of the spiritual life. The beauty, harmony and sacredness of individual spiritual traditions need not be sacrificed but may someday be understood in a deeper and more personally meaningful light.Excerpt from Once and Future ChristPrefaceThe Need and the SourceWe live in an age where the need for a fresh understanding of God’s presence in our lives is great because the darkness of ignorance, too, is great. The potential to destroy ourselves and planet earth is all too present.Adding to our predicament is the simple fact that religion — which ought to unite us in peace and harmony — tends to divide us. Why should the fact that great spiritual teachers and saints have lived in all lands and in all times be a source of conflict? It is not as though they disagree among themselves on whether we should strive to love God and to express that love to all.Yet neither do we need a “one world” religion. The different religions reflect the variations in cultures and history and differing points of view of the single “elephant” of truth. The diversity that exists in the various faiths, prayers and rituals are precious and sacred. What is needed is a new understanding of what the various faith traditions point to: the potential for the elevation of our human nature into our divine nature, into the image of our Creator. What, then, divides people of faith from a new understanding? The first is the prejudice that orthodox believers of each religion have against other religions. The second is the disillusionment and skepticism of non-religionists who are put off by religious bigotry. It doesn’t help that this latter group gleefully contrasts the usefulness of science with the unprovable assertions of religious dogma. That dogmatists and skeptics alike might find renewed inspiration and acceptance would be an incalculable benefit to humanity. Truly the result would be, to quote the Book of Revelations, “the healing of the nations.”Paramhansa Yogananda is known throughout the world as the author of what has become a twentieth century classic of spiritual literature, Autobiography of a Yogi. Yogananda was born in 1893 in India and came to America in 1920. He traveled through the United States attracting thousands to his lectures and classes, becoming one of the nation’s most sought-after inspirational speakers of the 1930’s. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his work in Los Angeles.Yogananda was sent to the West to show that the same, unchanging divine message illuminates all true faiths. He gave special emphasis to the teachings of Jesus Christ (New Testament) and the teachings of Lord Krishna (Bhagavad Gita). His is not a syncretic concoction nor a dilution of their respective teachings into a tasteless alphabet soup of “-isms.” It was his intent, and the intention of those who sent him, to reveal the underlying unity and universal applicability of both Jesus’ message and that of Krishna. This book is inspired to both explain and to explore the details and implications of his insights into the teachings of these two illumined world teachers. I believe millions of Christians know intuitively that Jesus’ life and teachings are for everyone but, burdened by the exclusive claims of Christian dogma, too many Christians and Christian leaders feel they must view as second-class anyone who does not believe as they do.Paramhansa Yogananda stated that “Jesus was crucified once but his teachings have been crucified daily ever since.” Yogananda coined the term “Churchianity” to distinguish the true teachings of Jesus Christ from the institutional teachings of the churches. His intention was not so much to criticize but to elevate and inspire. No organization holds a monopoly on truth and among sincere seekers is not truth crucified daily by human attachments and general ignorance? As Pontius Pilate asked Jesus: “What is truth?” As we see in the investigations of science, finding the truth behind the appearance of matter and energy is no simple or easy task.Scholars and historians who have studied the history of Christianity testify to its ever-evolving forms, challenges, successes, and betrayals. And yet, it has survived, I believe, by the spiritual power of its underlying truth. Whatever one might say about Christians, churches, or Christianity, the life of Jesus Christ changed the course of history; it has produced great saints, great art, music, literature, and has inspired true seekers down through the ages. We acknowledge that abuses and grave errors have also occurred. Yogananda pointed out that the “true custodians of religion” are the saints, not the prelates and theologians. It is the saints who live, and not merely speak, the “truth that shall make us free.”This book is based on the insights, commentaries, and intuitive realization of Paramhansa Yogananda who was one of the twentieth century’s spiritual giants. In the Hindu “Bible,” the Bhagavad Gita, it is taught that in every age God responds to the silent prayers of human hearts and sends to earth God-realized souls to bring afresh the eternal message of our soul’s immortality. In this book, I hope to share insights inspired by Yogananda’s original writings and by the writings of one of Yogananda’s most prolific and publicly active direct disciples: Swami Kriyananda, founder of the worldwide work called “Ananda.”One of the most precious gifts that Yogananda brought to modern culture is meditation and the advanced technique of meditation that is called Kriya Yoga. But meditation and Kriya Yoga are not the focus of this book.It would be a fair question to ask, “For whom has this book been written?” It is my sincere hope that Christians who seek in their hearts to expand beyond the exclusive claims of Christian dogma will find hope, inspiration, and wisdom for their courageous journey. And that those who love India’s timeless wisdom will enjoy seeing that wisdom shining through the words of Jesus Christ and the prophets. An explanation here may be helpful. Paramhansa Yogananda did not approach the Bible in the manner of scholars. He did not examine the original meanings of Greek or Aramaic words, or their evolution; nor did he speculate on the errors or interpretations of translators; nor did he imagine conniving plots by theologians, or church administrators down through the centuries. Yogananda isn’t attacking anything or anyone. He is using the ancient wisdom of India to pierce the veil of Christian dogma to show their similarity. Having taken up residence and citizenship in America in the twentieth century, Yogananda brings a contemporary perspective and language to this task. Yogananda’s teachings are rooted in a worldview and spiritual tradition that reaches far back into the history of India’s greatest saints and sages. One need not be a follower of Yogananda to appreciate these insights. But I hope that those who are attuned to Yogananda will appreciate my attempt to share those insights.Chapter 1 In the Beginning Chapter 2 Creation, Creativity, and Science Chapter 3 The Trinity Chapter 4 Fall from Grace Chapter 5 Garden of Eden Chapter 6 But Why? For Beginning and Experienced Yogis Alike Both instructive and inspiring, Kriya Yoga: Spiritual Awakening for the New Age can be the spark showing the aspiring devotee both how and why to take up the lifelong practice of Kriya Yoga. Learn the pitfalls to look out for along the way, and how to reach ultimate success on your journey to Self-realization. Simultaneously, this book is a roadmap for the already practicing Kriya Yogi. Through real-life stories from longtime Kriyabans, learn those attitudes and practices that can help or hinder your progress on the spiritual path. “I wasn’t sent to the West by Christ and the great masters of India,” Paramhansa Yogananda often told his audiences, “to dogmatize you with a new theology. Jesus himself asked Babaji to send someone here to teach you the science of Kriya Yoga, that people might learn how to commune with God directly. I want to help you toward the attainment of actual experience of Him, through your daily practice of Kriya Yoga.” He added, “The time for knowing God has come!” Nayaswami Devarshi is a longtime Ananda minister and Kriyacharya (authorized Kriya Yoga teacher). He lives in India, leading Ananda’s monastery and serving as the director of Ananda’s global Kriya Yoga Sangha. Devarshi works with those taking Kriya Yoga for the first time, and counsels experienced practitioners. He prepares devotees to receive Kriya Yoga and conducts Kriya Initiations around the world.Excerpt from Kriya Yoga: Spiritual Awakening for the New Age Foreword You’re about to read a book that can transform your life. Kriya Yoga is much more than the latest theory for self-improvement, but is based on an ageless tradition of universal truth: the ancient science of yoga and meditation. Yes, “ancient” because its roots go back in time to a period long before historical records were kept. Stone seals showing people seated in various yoga postures have been found in the Indus Valley of India, and have been dated by archaeologists as far back as 5000 B.C. And, yes, “a science” because its assumptions have been tested in the laboratory of human life and consciousness over millennia and have proven to be true. In fact, modern researchers in such highly-respected institutions as Harvard Medical School and the Mayo Clinic have been doing extensive studies on the effects of meditation. Their findings show that a regular practice lowers blood pressure, improves the quality of sleep, improves concentration, reduces stress, controls anxiety, and reduces age-related memory loss, to name a few. But the greatest benefit of Kriya Yoga, which is a technique of meditation, is the positive transformation it brings in our own consciousness. Through Kriya practice, we become aware of an untapped reservoir of subtle energy within us. By learning to direct this energy to higher centers of consciousness in the brain, we begin to experience our own highest potential. We can say this from personal experience, since we’ve been practicing Kriya for more than fifty years. The clarity and peace of mind, increased capacity to love and understand others, and the ability to deal calmly with challenges are priceless gifts. Perhaps most important is that over time we begin to experience ourself as a part of a greater reality that underlies everything. Nayaswami Devarshi has presented Kriya Yoga in an easily understandable and engaging way. This book is filled with inspiring, thought-provoking stories from his own life and those of others. Such a presentation of Kriya for the general public has long been needed, and is a great contribution to the understanding of how human consciousness evolves. Another major theme convincingly presented here is that we are entering a New Age, called by the sages of India, Dwapara Yuga. According to this teaching, our planet is moving from a time in which fixed, separate forms and material thinking were considered the norms. This materialistic approach is still reflected in many entrenched religious, political, and national institutions. Dwapara Yuga is characterized by fluid, unitive thinking and seeing things not in terms of form, but of energy. This kind of thinking can be seen in many cutting edge developments in science, business, and human relationships. Because Kriya Yoga works by awakening inner energy and the resultant fluidity of thought, it may be said to exemplify the consciousness of this new age. This book may open doors for you that lead to greater happiness, inner freedom, and Self-awareness. As each of us transforms our own consciousness, we can also help bring about a change in the world around us. As Mahatma Gandhi so eloquently said: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Through sincere practice, Kriya Yoga holds the key to personal and global upliftment. Nayaswami Jyotish Nayaswami Devi Introduction In August 1920, a young Paramhansa Yogananda, author of Autobiography of a Yogi, set out on the long ocean voyage from his native India to America, bringing with him the ancient teachings of meditation and Kriya Yoga. When asked, “Is your teaching a new religion?” Yogananda replied, “It is a new expression of truths that are eternal.” His simple words refer to Sanatan Dharma, the eternal truth which predates all religions. Yogananda declared, “You are on the eve of a great spiritual awakening, a great change in the churches, where true souls will be drawn to seek the experience of God’s presence.” Formal religion focuses mainly on outward rituals, dogmas, and rules, and on the false notion that the worshiper can only approach God through the intercession of a priest. Yogananda called such religion — equally common East and West — “Churchianity.” Yogananda’s teacher, Swami Sri Yukteswar, explained that the planet has entered into a new age. He wrote that we have exited Kali Yuga, an age of materialism and outward form. Only recently has the planet moved into Dwapara Yuga, an age of energy, growing awareness, and fluidity. Modern science has shown that matter is energy. Every significant invention of the twentieth century is based on the new energy-awareness, from telegraphs, telephones, and radios, to countless electronic technologies and gadgets that have fundamentally changed people’s lives. A new understanding is similarly growing in spirituality and religion. Many people now question the purpose of outward forms and rituals — they seek instead the direct inner experience of higher truth. Yogananda dedicated his life to showing how to have that direct personal experience. Essential to his mission was introducing the ancient teachings of Kriya Yoga and writing fresh interpretations of two of the great world scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita and the Bible. Kriya Yoga (which I will often refer to as “Kriya”) is more than a technique. Yogananda gave the technique of Kriya to his students as part of a comprehensive way of life, designed to help them individually realize their soul natures — and to bring that realization into their daily lives. Millions would learn about Kriya Yoga from Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi, published in 1946. I was surprised to read that Kriya, or a similar technique, was taught by Krishna to his disciple Arjuna, by Christ and his disciples, by the Indian sage Patanjali, and by many other enlightened teachers over the centuries. “The Science of Kriya Yoga,” a central chapter in his autobiography, bridges the divide between science and religion. The yoga science is based upon universal inner realities. Two simple examples: someone sitting upright with a straight spine will feel more energy than someone sitting slumped over; someone whose eyes are gazing upward will feel more uplifted than someone looking down. These responses come regardless of our religious beliefs. Meditation is also an art. The highest expression of any art, such as painting or music, is much more than demonstration of technique. Great artists work with feeling and intuition. Perfect technique alone never makes an artist’s works great. Nor can spiritual techniques alone, including Kriya Yoga, make someone a saint, one who has realized God. In Autobiography of a Yogi, Yogananda recalls his boyhood meeting with a great yogi-saint, Bhaduri Mahasaya, who said to him: “You go often into the silence, but have you developed anubhava (actual perception of God)?” He was reminding me to love God more than meditation. “Do not mistake the technique for the Goal.” The saints of all traditions are living canvases demonstrating the highest human art and science. Paramhansa Yogananda predicted a bright future for humanity: a future with a unitive understanding of the shared reality that connects us all. That understanding will lead to fulfilling Yogananda’s broader mission, to “inspire the nations to forsake suicidal wars, race hatreds, religious sectarianism, and the boomerang-evils of materialism.” He commissioned a direct disciple, Swami Kriyananda, with showing how his teachings could shed light on every aspect of human existence. The monastic name, Kriyananda, is unusual in the Indian tradition — Kriya means “action” and “ananda” means “divine bliss.” Thus “Kriyananda” means “one who strives to realize the bliss of his nature through right action, including the practices of Kriya Yoga.” Swami Kriyananda dedicated his life to showing how to apply the teachings of Sanatan Dharma and the practices of Kriya Yoga to every aspect of life. The Ananda communities he founded are living laboratories of this practical science and art. They are proof that a spiritual life can create bonds of harmony and cooperation between souls from all religious, cultural, and national backgrounds. This book is the fruit of more than forty years of personal experience of the Kriya path and teachings, most of which have been devoted to sharing them with others. Whether you are already a practitioner of Kriya Yoga or wish to learn more about Kriya, I hope this book will give you a better understanding of its depth and breadth. If you follow another spiritual practice, I believe the universal principles of Kriya can help shed light on your path. — Nayaswami Devarshi Humanity during Dwapara Yuga will cease to depend on crystallized political and institutional systems and will seek more fluid definitions of its ideals. In the past three centuries we have seen the wane of organized religion — of “Churchianity,” as Yogananda called it — and an increasing affirmation of the inner spirit of religion. Religion used to be identified with church affiliation and formal statements of belief; now it is becoming identified with inner Self-realization, and with a less structured, more informal fellowship of truth-seekers with one another. — Swami Kriyananda Contents Foreword by Nayaswami Jyotish and Nayaswami Devi Introduction by Nayaswami Devarshi chapter one—Kriya Yoga: Spiritual Awakening for the New Age chapter two—An Age of Energy chapter three—Change Your Magnetism chapter four— “Pranayam Be Thy Religion” chapter five—Combining Art and Science chapter six—Feeling: From Human to Divine chapter seven—The Fire of Devotion chapter eight—Cooperating with Grace chapter nine—Control the Reactive Process chapter ten—Karma, Kriya, and Action chapter eleven—Change Your Destiny chapter twelve—The Goal—Self-Realization chapter thirteen—Transcending the Ego chapter fourteen—The Need for a Guide chapter fifteen—The Technological Yogi chapter sixteen—Inner Communion chapter seventeen—The Final Exam Appendix: How to Learn Kriya Yoga

The Road Ahead is an exploration of the Paramhansa Yogananda's predictions about the future of our planet. Yogananda’s initial impact on Western culture was truly impressive. His lasting spiritual legacy has been even greater. His Autobiography of a Yogi, first published in 1946, helped launch a spiritual revolution in the West. Translated into more than fifty languages, it remains a best-selling spiritual classic to this day. Originally published by Swami Kriyananda in 1973, the book discusses what Yogananda's predictions could mean in our lives and how we can best approach the challenges that face us. While Yogananda's predictions are sometimes dire, The Road Ahead ultimately looks forward with expansive solutions to whatever upheavals this world brings. This re-release has a new foreword written by Nayaswami Jyotish and Nayaswami Devi, the global leaders of Ananda Sangha Worldwide.Contents for The Road Ahead Foreword v 1. The Need to Prepare3 2.
